Position Summary
The Graphic Designer will support the mission of Homeboy Art Academy by using design as a tool for storytelling, empowerment, and transformation. This position requires a culturally responsive approach in working with formerly gang-involved and system-impacted populations. The Graphic Designer will integrate their creative expertise with restorative and community-based practices, contributing to arts education, healing through the arts, and the development of transferable skills that connect participants to the creative economy.

The Graphic Designer will support the mission of Homeboy Art Academy by using design as a tool for storytelling, empowerment, and transformation. This position requires a culturally responsive approach in working with formerly gang-involved and system-impacted populations. The Graphic Designer will integrate their creative expertise with restorative and community-based practices, contributing to arts education, healing through the arts, and the development of transferable skills that connect participants to the creative economy.
- Self-taught designers with strong transferable skill sets encouraged to apply.
- Bachelor’s degree (BA) or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3+ years of professional experience with a portfolio demonstrating expertise across print, digital, and branding.
- Knowledge of arts education and healing through arts practices.
- Experience with culturally responsive and restorative, community-based education.
- Create visual text and imagery concepts by hand or using computer software to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate.
- Develop layouts, illustrations, logos, branding, and production design for events, advertisements, brochures, magazines, and other media.
- Design for web, digital, and social media platforms.
- Collaborate with formerly gang-involved and system-impacted populations to support their graphic design needs as part of the Creative Economy track.
- Support curriculum development that connects graphic design with transferable career skills.
- Assist Art Navigators and staff with production, space design, and creative needs.
- Communicate in advance (day of or day before) if unable to attend work.
- Schedule vacation in advance to ensure coverage and coordination.
- Arrive on time and maintain consistent attendance.
- Participate in staff meetings as required.
- Strong visual communication and creative problem-solving skills.
- Ability to collaborate in a healing-centered, community-based environment.
- Culturally responsive and respectful approach to diverse lived experiences.
- Reliable, punctual, and organized with excellent follow-through.
